I am quite a fan of a lot of Sorolla’s paintings and spend all of yesterday prowling the internet to collect them. This one ‘A rooftop with flowers’ I am particularly fond of. I am also trying to be more detailed in my understanding of the process used by artist’s that inspire me. This is a few quick notes I have made for my personal use.

- He has painted on a white priming/straight onto canvas – you can see the white coming through in the reserves i.e. look at specks coming through in the Umber near (2) – also it helps to give the painting that very light luminous feel.
- He has done an underpainting in Umber which he uses as reserves in a lot of places and helps to make up that large dark foliage mass. I feel that he has maybe let the underpainting dry at this point and then done the next stages once the underpainting has dried – due to his scumbling over the Umber i.e. near (4)
- Painted in foliage, flowers, colours etc.
- He has used the Umber to achieve a mid in areas.
- He has gone back and removed excess underpainting.
